“The Creaking On The Stairs: Finding Faith And Forgiveness Through Childhood Abuse” by Mez McConnell (Christian Focus, 2019)
Mez McConnell is a survivor of childhood abuse, the Pastor of Niddrie Community Church and the Director of 20schemes in Scotland. I’ve just finishing read this book, where Mez shares his story about some of the abuse he suffered, how he came to be a Christian, and the centrality of the gospel of Jesus Christ for our lives and as we minister to others. Whether you have been abused or not, have abused or not, are a Christian or not, I strongly recommend you read Mez’s book. Mez makes clear that the only solution for him in life was not to have his identity in being a victim—something that many encouraged him in, given what he’d suffered—but rather in being in Christ—accepting that we are all sinners, receiving Jesus’ death for our sin and being a child of God.
