Something I’m listening to
Eve Re-loaded: Climate Conscious Christians
Since dipping my toe into the podcast waters, I’ve discovered that Australian Christian women are podcasting. Eve Re-loaded by Zhien-U Bakarich and Rebecca Lui, who are both based in Sydney’s south-west, is in its second season, and their podcast covers a wide range of topics. I recently listened to their latest episode on “Climate conscious Christians”. I even subscribed so I won’t miss their next drop.
The Word of God: What, Why and How?
This 2019 evening seminar featured Australian women and was aimed at women Bible Study leaders. It focused on the fundamental topic of God’s word: Carmelina Read talked about “Why is it central?” Download the audio recording for free.
Gentle and Lowly: A 14-Day Devotional (Crossway)
Lastly, I’ve been listening to Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund on Audible. I started listening to it after a friend told me this book was her favourite read of the last few years and that it made her love Jesus a little bit more. It also happens to be, in my opinion, the perfect companion to the Book of Ruth, which I’ve been spending a lot of time on as EQUIP21 approaches!
I’m loving the slow pace of the devotions, which were written in the style of the Puritans: each dwell deeply on one verse per chapter. I was excited to find this set of 14 devotions based on the book on Spotify. Each devotion is a few minutes long and they give you a taster for each chapter, as well as something beautiful to ponder all day. You might want to buy the book after listening, like I did.
Something I’m reading
Let Us Reason Together About Complementarianism (Kevin De Young)
This article is by Kevin De Young is adapted from his latest book, Men and Women in the Church (Crossway 2021). In it, De Young addresses a number of common objections to Complementarianism. It’s helpful and refreshing to read a reasoned interpretation (even if you don’t agree).
I think Men and Women in the Church will be my next purchase for my bed stand “to-read” pile.
Something from the archives
P&A has a treasure trove of good resources on the topic of men and women—many of which were recorded live at P&A events. Here are two very different resources that I’ve found thought-provoking and helpful in stretching my thinking.
Submission: A relationally rich word
This was an elective at the 2016 Annual P&A conference: Claire Smith and Peter Bolt discuss how submission is part and parcel of a relational community.
Sex at uni to unisex
This was a P&A evening event in 2018: Phillip Jensen explores the history and implications of, perhaps, the greatest cultural change of our generation: the Sexual Revolution.
