Five times in his letters, the Apostle Paul uses the words “submit” or “submission” to describe an activity or attitude of women in relation to men. Why does he choose this particular word group, and what does he actually mean by it? We modern readers often make assumptions about what this word means; are these assumptions correct? In this elective, we explore these questions, seeking clarity and precision in the meaning of these verses.
Please note: this is an academic elective. I am aiming to present some initial research to generate some discussion and receive feedback. While I’m hoping and praying that this research will eventually lead to practical applications, the aim in this particular elective is more focused: to dig deeply into God’s word and seek to understand precisely what it means.
Level: Academic.
